Teeth Whitening

Introduction

A bright, white smile looks younger and more attractive and can add confidence when smiling, laughing or meeting someone new. In today’s digital age, how you look is important because photos often remain on social media indefinitely.

If your smile is not quite as radiant as it once was, or if you want to treat yourself to teeth whitening in preparation for an upcoming event, such as a wedding, reunion or holiday, contact Preston Dental Group to book a teeth whitening consultation.

Teeth whitening (or bleaching) is a simple, non-invasive dental treatment used to change the colour of natural tooth enamel and is an ideal way to enhance the beauty of your smile.

Because having whiter teeth has now become the number one aesthetic concern of most patients, there are a few ways to whiten teeth.  The most popular method is using a home teeth whitening system that will whiten teeth dramatically.  Since teeth whitening only works on natural tooth enamel, it is important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc.  Replacement of any restorations will be done after bleaching so they will match the newly bleached teeth.

Teeth whitening is not permanent.  A touch-up may be needed every several years, and more often if you smoke, drink coffee, tea, or wine.

Reasons for teeth whitening:

  • Fluorosis (excessive fluoridation during tooth development).
  • Normal wear of outer tooth layer.
  • Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
  • Yellow, brown stained teeth.

Take home whitening kits. (Pola night)

Take home whitening kits provide convenience and are cost effective for whitening your teeth at home.

Firstly, we will take an impression of your teeth, which will then be used to make a customised silicone mould. The mould will exactly fit the shape of your teeth.

The mould is part of the kit that you take home with you. The kit also contains 10 tubes of whitening gel, which is applied to the inside of the mould before inserting the mould over your teeth.

We will advise you of the frequency and length of time to wear the mould while you are at home.

With the at home teeth whitening kit, all you need to do is replenish the whitening gel as needed. The moulds should last you for years, giving you the freedom to whiten your teeth as needed, without a visit to your dentist.

Regular dental visits are recommended to ensure the good health of your overall dental hygiene.

In-chair teeth whitening

In-chair teeth whitening is a non-invasive dental treatment that lifts stains from the pores of teeth and lightens the colour of natural tooth enamel, leading to the appearance of whiter, brighter teeth.

In-chair teeth whitening is the quickest dental solution for whitening teeth and removing or reducing stains and discolouration. It typically involves the application of whitening product directly onto the teeth and the use of heat, a special light or laser to activate and/or accelerate the whitening agent.

With in-chair teeth whitening, results are typically achieved within a 60-minute dental appointment.

What are the benefits of in-chair teeth whitening?

There are several advantages associated with in-chair teeth whitening:

  • Dentists typically use whitening products that contain stronger concentrations of hydrogen peroxide compared with off-the-shelf or take-home products. This ensures results within one 60-minute dental treatment.
  • Dentists apply the whitening agent directly to the teeth so that the use of mouth trays, such as those provided in take-home and off-the-shelf whitening kits, is unnecessary.
  • Dentists supervise the treatment and can control the amount of whitening that occurs.
  • Dentists typically use a rubber shield to protect the gums from the whitening product.
  • Dentists can better match the types of stains with the best treatments, leading to better results.

Considerations

Teeth whitening will only work on natural teeth and extrinsic stains. It is also temporary, and the degree of whiteness will vary from individual to individual depending on the condition of the teeth and the type of whitening system used. Teeth whitening is also not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women.

At Preston Dental Group, we take a “no surprises” approach, with clear explanations about your options to help you make informed decisions on how to achieve the dental health and smile you want.
